What Is Mixed Media Art? How Layers Tell a Story
Mixed media art is exactly what it sounds like — and nothing like what you'd expect.
It's art made from more than one material, more than one process, more than one moment in time. Paint and paper. Rust and fiber. Found objects and ink. The whole point is that nothing is off-limits, and nothing has to be perfect.
At Her Spirit Creates, mixed media is the foundation of everything. Not because it's trendy. Because it's honest.
Why layers matter
A single layer of paint tells one story. Layers tell the truth.
When you build up surface — peeling paint over rusted metal, mold patterns over torn paper, fiber pressed into wet medium — you're doing what life actually does. You're leaving evidence of time. Of passage. Of things that broke and things that held.
The materials Marianne works with aren't accidental:
Peeling paint and rusted objects — the colors rust makes are some of the most complex you'll ever find. Moody, variable, earned by time.
Mold, lichen, rock patterns — these come directly from the earth. They arrive already patterned, already alive with movement and sacred geometry.
Rips, tears, imperfect edges — these aren't mistakes. They're where the light gets in. The frayed edge of a torn piece of paper holds more energy than a clean cut ever will.
Grungy, falling-apart material — history lives here. Every piece of aged fabric or found object carries a story it hasn't finished telling.
Lines, patterns, shapes with movement — mixed media breathes when it has rhythm. The eye needs somewhere to travel.
Mixed media as a reflective practice
Here's what most people don't know about working in mixed media: the process changes you.
When you're making decisions intuitively — this piece here, that texture there, tear this, leave that — you're practicing a kind of trust. You're training yourself to look at your world through a different lens. To find meaning in what's broken. To see possibility in what's been discarded.
That's not just an art practice. That's a life practice.
At Her Spirit Creates, the studio and the workshop are built on this idea. Art isn't decoration. It's a way of knowing yourself.

Every piece knows something. The work is learning to trust that.
